Alibaba Group Holding Ltd Appoints Eric Pelletier As Head Of International Government Affairs

Based on recent developments crossing wires, Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. (NYSE:BABA) announced the decision to appoint Eric Pelletier as Vice President, Head of International Government Affairs in Washington on Friday. An inside source informed Bloomberg that Mr. Pelletier would consolidate a team aimed at building relationship with government officials in several countries.

Establishing an office in Washington has been on Alibaba’s list since it first set foot in the US last September, the source told Bloomberg. One of Mr. Pelletier’s prime duties would be to communicate with the US Trade Representative. As the company had previously come under severe criticism from the Representative, in relation to the sale of fake and counterfeit goods on its platform, Mr. Pelletier’s appointment is projected to cushion the situation in this spectrum as well as improving ties with the Representative.

As Alibaba becomes more global, and continues to stamp its importance in markets all over the world, company management has recently decided to harbor ties with government officials. The source also explained that Mr. Pelletier’s post requires him to report to Tim Steinert, Alibaba’s general counsel and Jim Wilkinson, head of International Corporate Affairs.

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Pelletier was associated with General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) for nearly ten years. Most recently, he worked as the global executive leader for Government Affairs and Policy at General Electric Capital. The appointment is well positioned, as he is renowned for his leadership qualities in the international government affairs space. Moreover, the executive has also previously worked for US President George W. Bush as an adviser on legislation and policy issues, cited Bloomberg.

In a statement to Business Wire, Alibaba’s senior vice president, head of International Corporate Affairs, Jim Wilkinson showcased considerable optimism about the new appointment. Mr. Wilkinson stated, “Eric is a proven leader who is respected on both sides of the aisle in Washington and around the globe. There is no one better to lead Alibaba Group’s international government affairs and regulatory efforts, and Eric will be a strong addition to our international leadership team.”

In a statement to Business Wire, the newly appointed executive projected enthusiasm to serve his position at the company. Mr. Pelletier stated, “I am humbled by the confidence Alibaba Group has placed in me, I eagerly look forward to joining the outstanding Alibaba team and working collaboratively to build the international government affairs function.”
